Summary of the Role

As an experienced and highly capable Investigator you will support international law enforcement agencies in delivering high-quality, real-time investigations into serious and complex crimes.

This role operates on a 70/30 split: 70% is dedicated to direct operational investigative delivery, and 30% to capability building, providing mentoring, coaching, and professional development support to local investigators and agency staff.

This dual-function model is central to RSMS’s mission to build sustainable, locally-led investigative capacity alongside immediate operational impact.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct investigations into serious and complex crimes, including homicide, violent crime, and serious organised crime.
  • Manage caseloads, ensuring all enquiries and actions are completed efficiently and to a high standard.
  • Build and prepare comprehensive court case files, ensuring investigative continuity from initiation to prosecution.
  • Support prosecuting authorities by collating evidence from multiple sources and formats.
  • Provide evidence in court as a case officer and witness when required.
  • Prioritise and manage workloads in line with operational demands and capacity.
  • Participate in operational activity including arrests, searches, seizure of property, and evidential processing.
  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects; take statements and conduct follow-up enquiries.
  • Support witness management and provide guidance throughout the criminal justice process.
  • Ensure all investigations are progressed in a timely manner, meeting criminal justice deadlines.
  • Handle, document, and store exhibits and disclosable materials in accordance with legislation and procedures.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of disclosure obligations and data protection requirements.

Capability Building and Mentoring (30% of Role)

  • Mentor and coach local investigators and agency staff, transferring investigative knowledge, skills, and professional standards to build long-term in-country capacity.
  • Provide structured on-the-job support to less experienced officers working on live investigations, modelling best practice in evidence gathering, case management, and court preparation.
  • Deliver or contribute to structured learning inputs, briefings, and professional development sessions tailored to the agency’s capability needs and operational context.
  • Identify individual and organisational development needs, and report progress and outcomes to the RSMS lead, contributing to capability assessments and programme reporting.
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement, professional integrity, and evidence-based investigative practice within the host agency.

Experience / Skills / Qualifications Required

  • PIP 2 qualification or equivalent investigative experience with documented evidence of skills.
  • Recent experience in homicide, serious and complex crime investigations.
  • Strong understanding of PACE, RIPA, and relevant police legislation.
  • Proven ability to manage investigations from start to finish, including case building and court preparation.
  • Experience in giving evidence in court as both a case officer and witness.
  • Ability to manage multiple investigations and prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Skilled in operational procedures including arrests, searches, and evidence handling.
  • Experience in interviewing and supporting witnesses and victims.
  • Knowledge of legislation and procedures for handling exhibits and disclosable materials.
  • Solid understanding of disclosure and data protection
  • Demonstrable experience in mentoring, coaching, or training less experienced investigators or police officers, with the ability to transfer complex investigative skills in an operational context.
  • Confidence in delivering structured professional development inputs and adapting communication style to varying levels of experience and cultural contexts.
